- Preheat a small skillet over low heat.
- Spread mayonnaise or butter on one side of each bread slice. Place 2 slices in the skillet, mayonnaise side down.
- Top the bread in the skillet with cheese slices. Place the remaining bread slices on top, mayonnaise side out.
- Cook until the bread is golden brown, about 4-5 minutes. Flip the sandwich and cook the other side until golden brown.
- For an optional fancy crust, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on the outside of the sandwich before removing from heat. Crisp the cheese on the pan for 1-2 minutes until it forms a crisp crust.
